"In their own words"

According to World Golf Hall of Fame member Beth Daniel, “The first two days are basically exhibition golf. Whoever wins the singles usually wins The Solheim Cup.” At Interlachen in 2002, she was right.

Trailing 9 to 7 after two days of play, the U.S. team fought throughout the final day to gain the lead. It seems Wendy Ward (then 56th on the money list) brought the most surprise – and helped turn the tide for the U.S. – when she made a key move, playing then-world No. 1 Annika Sorenstam even through 18 holes. In a clutch effort, Ward, somewhat unexpectedly, earned a key half-point for the Americans, a significant factor in the team’s success.

Ultimately, the United States reigned victorious over Europe 15 1/2 to 12 1/2.

“The Americans are great Sunday players. While there’s all that red (on the scoreboard), all you’re really trying to do is win your match, but you can’t help just seeing red, red, red all the way,” said Laura Davies.
