Date: September 1996 Results: USA 17 - 11 Captains: Judy Rankin - USA Mickey Walker - EUR USA Team | EUR Team "In their own words" In keeping with a tradition that began at The Solheim Cup two years earlier at The Greenbrier, fans sitting in the bleachers by the first tee spontaneously serenaded the European players as they arrived for their matches in expressive songs—some patriotic and some with lyrics that were just plain appropriate. It was Abba’s “Super Trooper” for Hall of Fame member Annika Sorenstam, “What’s it all about, Alfie?” for Helen Alfredsson, “Flower of Scotland” for Dale Reid and a wordless rendition of the French national anthem for Marie Laure de Lorenzi. Even Captain Mickey Walker was greeted with the theme music from the film “The Sting” in deference to the patch she wore that week after an unfortunate brush with a wasp. It’s not often—or ever—one hears of fans at a golf tournament singing, much less serenading the players. Then again, this isn’t your average golf tournament. Europe led 9-7 heading into Sunday’s singles matches. However, European Captain Mickey Walker’s decision not to lead with Laura Davies, placing her 3rd in the line-up, may have stifled the team and the crowds, who were accustomed to getting behind Davies’ fast play and fiery personality. While leader Annika Sorenstam beat Pat Bradley 2&1, the joyful songs surrounding the first tee were slowly quieted, as that became the final European victory during the 1996 Solheim Cup. The Americans would retain the Cup following a final score of 17-11.
