Stories from Solheim Captains and Participants
I think it was easier to play than being captain. I had a lot of sleepless nights as captain. There is an immense amount of pressure and you want everything to be right, and especially right for the players.
On Saturday night at Interlachen (2002) with our team in a hole, after dinner Patty Sheehan (U.S. Captain) gathered everyone into the bleacher seats behind the 1st tee and gave us a pep talk about what was going to happen the next day. That gathering spurred our great comeback. The fans went crazy. It was so exciting to be a part of.
The fan support has grown considerably over the years. The first Solheim Cup at Lake Nona was a bit like the “one man and his dog” sort of thing. There was not much interest and no one really knew what it was. I would imagine The Ryder Cup in its early years was a bit like that too. But since then, the galleries have become part of the event. You know, they’re signing and chanting … it can really become a home field advantage … or it can really work against you.
