"In Their Own Words"
Stories from Solheim Captains and Participants

I think it has become the biggest event in women’s golf, ranked right up there with U.S. Women’s Open and Women’s British Open. Most of the Europeans’ goal is to make The Solheim Cup team and win the Women’s British Open.

For many years we [Europeans] have been in the shadows of the American golfers. The majors are mostly in the U.S. and the Europeans—both men and women—play on one tour in all different countries. We’ve always been the underdogs. When someone says something to make us more determined, we feel united in that we want to beat the Americans.

The Sunday singles matches were a particularly tough run for the U.S. team. We lost seven of those 10 matches and not a single one of them made it to the 18th hole as we lost the Cup 11.5-6.5.

Later that night we all got together and drowned our sorrows in much wine and many beers. And then we decided we are going to play that 18th hole. So, at around midnight, with caddies in tow, we gathered up some flashlights and candles and proceeded to play that 18th hole. It was pitch black and we couldn’t see where our shots went – but we all got to play the 18th hole.
